If you lead a relatively healthy lifestyle but still struggle with stubborn areas of fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise, you may benefit from liposuction. This minimally invasive procedure can help to contour the body by reducing targeted areas of fat. Liposuction is very popular because it can produce dramatic results but does not require a lot of recovery time.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that utilizes a device called a cannula to extract fat from targeted areas. The incisions used for liposuction are very small – less than 1 cm long. These tiny incisions heal fairly quickly, and don’t leave noticeable scars.

Liposuction is not a weight loss tool. If you are overweight and want to shed pounds, liposuction will not help. We recommend trying to lose weight through a healthy diet and exercise plan first, then using liposuction to help get rid of the last bits of stubborn fat.

Liposuction Candidates

The best candidates for liposuction:

  • Are already at or near a healthy, stable weight
  • Have a BMI of under 30
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Are able and willing to maintain a healthy lifestyle following surgery
  • Do not smoke, or are able to quit
  • Have sufficiently elastic skin, without a lot of sagging

Liposuction can be performed on overweight men and women, as long as you are not classified as obese with a BMI of 30 or over. However, you’ll obtain the best results if you undergo liposuction after you’ve already reached a healthy weight that you can maintain long-term.

In addition, it’s important to understand that liposuction only removes unwanted fat. It does not tighten the skin. If you have loose, sagging skin in addition to excess fat, you may want to have a skin tightening procedure done along with liposuction.

What Areas Can Liposuction Treat?

Liposuction can be used on many areas of the body. Some of the most popular areas for liposuction are:

  • Love handles
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Bra roll
  • Thighs
  • Upper arms
  • Armpits and knees
  • Double chin
  • Neck

Multiple areas of the body can be treated at once so that you don’t need to undergo multiple procedures. Discuss which parts of your body you’re struggling with during your consultation so that your surgeon can help you come up with an appropriate treatment plan.

Recovery After Liposuction

Liposuction recovery is usually fairly easy, although the amount of time it takes to fully heal will depend on how many areas you had treated and whether or not you also had a skin tightening procedure done.

In general, patients can return to work within the first week, sometimes within the first few days. If you have a physical job that requires strenuous activity, we may recommend that you take more time off than if you had an office job.

You’ll need to wear compression garments for some time after your procedure, and we’ll give you prescription medication for any pain or discomfort. Do not drive or care for another person while taking this medication.

It’s normal to have bruising and swelling after liposuction. The bruising may last for a week or two, while the swelling should peak after around 3 days then gradually subside. Don’t be alarmed if your results seem to be lumpy or asymmetric at first; this is due to swelling, and will eventually smooth out.
