Does Breast Lift Surgery Leave a Scar?

Woman's breast with breast lift surgical markings

Breast lift surgery requires incisions to be made on the breast mound. Through these incisions, underlying tissue can be lifted and repositioned, and loose and sagging skin can be removed. Depending on the amount of ptosis (sagging) present, the incision may be made around the nipple alone or around the nipple with an additional incision running vertically to the breast crease. In some cases, an additional incision will be needed horizontally along the breast crease to fully lift and firm the breasts.

When incisions are made around the nipple alone, scars are often completely obscured by the dark skin of the areola. Incisions on the mound or along the crease, however, will always be somewhat visible. This is where the care you take of your breasts and body in the days leading up to and coming out of breast lift surgery will play the biggest role.

You can help reduce your risks for visible scaring even before your surgery by refraining from products containing nicotine and alcohol, along with those that can thin the blood, including certain prescription medications. We will help you determine when it is safe to resume taking supplements and medications after your procedure. It is never a good idea to resume nicotine consumption. We encourage you to “stay quit” if that is part of your preparation.

After your procedure, you can reduce the risk of scars by keeping your incisions dry and clean. Avoiding strenuous activities that could irritate or strain your incisions will also be needed to help guard against thick and visible scars, as will the use of a compression garment during your initial healing process. We will provide clear instructions on how to enhance comfort and reduce risks to help ensure you have the tools you need for the best recovery possible.

Scars can be softened with silicone gel and sheets, certain topical ointments, and various non-surgical cosmetic procedures, such as laser skin resurfacing. If you find your incision scars unappealing, we would happy to provide additional information on these options.

Breast lift surgery can result in scars, but they needn’t be distracting. Give us a call at 850-500-7527 to schedule a consultation and learn more.
